Water temperatures, and in particular changes in water temperature, fundamentally affect how fish behave, where they hang out and what they eat. So it stands to reason that by undrestanding how fish respond to temperature we can get a better sense of where we'll find them in a water body and the lures and techniques that will catch them.

The NSW Mid-North Coast has more than it's fair share of fishing opportunities, with quality snapper being one of the most popular targets for inshore and offshore lure fishers. Sponsored angler Zac Panaretos moved to Coffs Harbour around 18 months ago after many years chasing snapper and other species in the Sydney area. He immediately found the need to upgrade to tackle with more stopping power as he consistently hooked impressive reds on soft plastics and jigs. Zac joins the ALF podcast to share his tips and learnings for targeting snapper on lures around Coffs. ___________ Want some extra tips and advice for catching more fish on lures? Winter is a great time for eging in Victoria, with some of the biggest squid turning up to hunt in shallow, clear water during the cooler months. Today's guest is Nev Hayes, a Victorian angler who has fished the Phillip Island area since he was a toddler. Nev targets a lot of species from his kayak, but over recent weeks has been blitzing the local squid population, with good numbers of XL squid including a 50cm hood-length specimen boated. Refershingly, Nev likes to keep things really simple and shares his strategies for doing do with ALF listeners during today's interview. ______________ Keen to support ALF AND also improve your lure fishing results? Mick Hassett describes slow pitch jigging on the Great Barrier Reef as being like "sticking your hand in the lolly jar with a blindfold on". We could try to focus on a single species, but the fact is that slow pitch jigging is so devastatingly effective (often even more so than live bait) and the species list is so long that you never know what will grab your lure. So instead we've focused this interview on the tackle, the jigs and the techniques for getting the most out of this exhilarating style of fishing! ____________ There is a "PLUS" edition of this episode and it contains probably the juiciest part of the conversation: finding active fish and setting up your drift for best results. Pittwater is a magical piece of water that's super accessible to NSW Central Coast anglers, yet remains a productive spot to target a range of species, including the ever-popular yellowtail kingfish. They don't come easily though, unless you know precisely when, where and how to fish for them. And who better to help us come to terms with those important details than long-time Pittwater fisho and former high-profile sportfishing guide, Peter Le Blang? In almost every episode where my guest is making their debut on the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast I ask the question "What's something we'd find in your tackle box that the average angler probably wouldn't have in their tackle box?" Of the whole interview this is often the question that most guests find the hardest to answer. So today I've turned the microphone back on myself and asked the same question. _______________ Want some help to catch more fish on lures? It's been a little while since the ALF podcast has paid the flathead population of Lake Macquarie a bit of a visit, but today's interview sets that problem straight! Richard Smith has been fishing the Newcastle area since he was just 9 years old, has been fishing the lake from a kayak since 2010 and in 2016 got involved with Yakhunters. His reputation for putting down his rod even during a contest to help less experienced anglers is legendary and through his involvement with the Lake Mac trophy flathead program he's become a prolific contributor to our understanding of the species. ______________ There is an extended ALF PLUS edition of this interview in the Team Doc Lures members area for those interested in finding the bigger fish in this system.
