Jason Carter author of the autobiography To Hell I Ride a comedic and often heartwrenching look at a life of self-discovery. Jason Carter was living what appeared to be a wonderful life from the outside. A remarkable wife, amazing kids, and a large house close to the country club, but he was fighting an internal battle of unresolved trauma and alcoholism. He was living with thoughts of suicide, as he says "a musky sock floating in the soup"; his unchecked drinking. After a session with a psychologist, he set off driving from Texas to Telluride, searching for clarity. Hypnotized by the open road, he finds himself wheeling through numerous sequences that accelerate his ruin. His book To Hell I Rideis determined, it’s darkly comedic, and it’s his journey into extreme self-awareness. As Jason explores his past, he confronts the inner personal demons haunting him today. Brutally honest, he bares it all; how alcohol crept into his life, the haunting reality that each drink took him farther away from the life he wanted to build, and the truth preventing him from salvation. This is Jason Carter in his own words, on the Knockin’ Doorz Down podcast. Jason sat down with Helen Bratton of Disaddicted to discuss how she turned the hardships of a traumatic childhood, alcoholism, and a stroke into her passion as an addiction recovery coach. Helen says IT IS TRUE LIFE CAN SUCK! This is my calling, the journey has been challenging, but it has been worth it. In the summer of 2014 in the hills outside Rome, Helen's life was turned upside down, shaken not stirred! She had a near-death stroke at 36 and had to rebuild her life as a disabled woman. She lost her marriage but thanks to a revelation in the hospital she knew no matter what she was alive for a reason. An active addict who further escalated, her drug of choice being alcohol, she could have let the depression which pre-existed worsened. She asked herself will my alcoholism kill me or change my life? She chose recovery from this insidious disease, that was her DECISION to get well and live. Helen initially got sober through a 12-step program but felt similar to her stroke, leading her to unravel her trauma and addiction. Helen worked with a great Recovery Coach who took her recovery to another level. She could choose a limited life or live a life helping others with a great meaning. She loved it so much that she went on to become a recovery coach. She guides others to embrace their authentic selves. Helen says she owes a lot to her addiction as recovering from it has gone on to improve and develop her life as a whole. She also says her stroke was a blessing too. Arlina was sexually abused at a very young age which led her to feel a sense of self-hatred and a desire to escape her feelings. At the age of 8, she took her first drink, thus starting her battle with substance abuse and addiction. In Arlina's 20's, it took her 2 years of experimenting, research, about 1,000 self-help books, and lots and lots of pain and frustration, but the undeniable answer was she was an addict. In her words "If it was in a bottle, a bag, or blue jeans, I was doin' it!" In sobriety, Arlina found a new freedom and a new happiness. The woman she is today is unrecognizable from the young scared girl who was so lost and hopeless. She has been with the love of her life since 1994. They have two amazing sons who have never seen her loaded. She has a wealth of friends and has had a successful career in High Tech Sales for the biggest companies in Silicon Valley. Jason sat down with Joseph Rojas of the rock band Seventh Day Slumber. They discussed how he fell into addiction due to the various traumas that he endured in his youth and the consequences of his addiction and how he turned them into his greatest advantage being of service to others and building a stable family life. Joseph Rojas grew up in the housing projects of Victoria, Texas, where gunfire and sirens echoed through the neighborhood. But, for Joseph, the rough streets became a refuge from the nightmare of his home life. He remembers being about three and a half years old and being ten feet away from my father as he beat my mother bloody, and that was the memory he grew up with, of a father. When Joseph was still a small child, his father left the family. Joseph’s mother worked long hours to provide for her two boys. Many times they were left to a babysitter that his mom was unaware was abusing her son. Joseph was hurting, empty, alone, and seeking acceptance. That's when he found the wrong crowd along with drugs and alcohol. At the age of 14, he did his first line of cocaine. Before he knew it, a line became two lines, two lines became three lines, and then by the end of it all, at the age of 21, he had a $400 a-day cocaine addiction. Learn how Joseph was able to turn his life around, through faith and support from his mom. How his musical journey saved his life, bringing purpose. Along with his faith, meeting his wife with who he has 3 sons, and how he started the rock band Seventh Day Slumber. This is Joseph Rojas in his own words, on Knockin’ Doorz Down.
