Some of the earliest known art—cave paintings from roughly 65,000 years ago—depict animals and subsequently infer our relationship to them. Artists throughout time have often turned to pets, livestock, service animals, and wild beasts as models, finding inspiration in both their familiarity and alien nature. This exhibition explores images of women working through prints from various decades and centuries. Consideration of the artist’s viewpoint will be critical in the presentation these works, particularly in highlighting the different ways male and female artists portray their subjects and their actions. Domestic work is featured in many of these images, presented in manners from celebratory to fetishistic. The depiction of the female body, particularly in regards to modelling and sex work, will also be explored.
