Ms. Marvel. Since Endgame, the MCU has done anything but slow down, especially with the addition of content on Disney Plus where the shows now continue the plot threads along with the movies. “Marauders” 20th-anniversary reflections. Archer continues setting the stage for centuries of conflict between the Federation and the Klingon Empire when he stands up for the inhabitants of a mining colony. But, to be fair, how hard is it to come into conflict with Klingons? Deuterium aside, the captain doesn’t like bullies, not on Earth and not here—on whatever planet this is. The crew of the Enterprise puts Klingon Commander Korok—not nearly as cute as his Zelda namesake—in his place when they teach the colonists how to defend themselves. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 2 with “Marauders” as we discuss how it mirrors its Akira Kurosawa inspiration, Seven Samurai, grows the relationship between Archer and T’Pol, and gets the full crew involved. Hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Ru...
Trans representation in Star Trek. In 2022, trans characters in Star Trek have become part of the fabric of humanity’s shared future in space. In addition to Adira and Gray Tal in Discovery, we’ve been treated to the villainess Captain Angel in Strange New Worlds and even an explicitly non-binary character, the Medusan Zero, in Prodigy. But a few decades ago, Star Trek’s most direct engagement with trans culture was the truly toe-curling Deep Space Nine episode “Profit and Lace.” That said, a number of stories from both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine had touched on trans issues more obliquely—in many cases unintentionally. In this episode of Primitive Culture, originally released as part of Tony Black’s podcast The Sanctuary, Tony is joined by Orion Armstrong for a look at the TNG episode “The Outcast,”which was intended by writer Jeri Taylor as an allegory about gay conversion therapy but is open to very different readings today as a trans story. They also discuss...
“A Quality of Mercy” Getting a visit from your future self is rarely a good thing, but if your future self is supposed to be dead, well, you might have hopes for positive news. That’s what Captain Pike thought when a silver fox in Monster Maroons strolled into his quarters. But soon he finds himself at the wedding of … well, he's not sure who they are … in an alternate timeline in which a famous confrontation with Romulans plays out differently, and very much the same. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss “A Quality of Mercy,” the final episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ inaugural season. We explore the retelling of the classic episode “Balance of Terror,” how this new story reinforces the importance of The Original Series as the foundation of Star Trek as we know it, and how it highlights the pivotal roles which Kirk, Spock, and Pike play in history. We also debate whether the series is leading us to a soft reboot of TOS. Oh...
Thor: Love and Thunder. When we left Thor in Endgame he had helped the Avengers defeat Thanos, given up his kingship over New Asgard and set sail with the Guardians of the Galaxy. In this episode of The 602 Club hosts Matthew Rushing and Christy Morris are joined by Amanda Pfeifer to talk about Thor: Love and Thunder. We discuss after Endgame, the humor, Thor, flashbacks, Jane, no character development, deserves more, action, effects and music, our ratings and the post credits. “A Night in Sickbay” 20th-anniversary reflections When Porthos takes a leak on a sacred tree, it’s strike two for the Enterprise crew with Kreetassans. But that relief doesn’t last the beloved pooch as a pathogen in the Kreetassan air leaves him sick. Archer then spends a night in sickbay where, when he isn't dreaming about T'Pol, he helps Phlox try to save Porthos. But don’t worry, eventually all is well and Archer even gets to play lumberjack. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 2 with “A Night in Sickbay” as we take a look inside the heads of Archer and Phlox, chase bats, and explore sexy canines and shipping. “All Those Who Wander” While on their way to Deep Space Station K-7 to deliver power cells, the crew of the Enterprise respond to a distress call from the USS Peregrine and find themselves in a fight for their lives against ferocious baby Gorn. A derelict starship on an icy Class-L planet is pretty damn creepy, as Sam Kirk put it—and he was right—but that’s just the beginning as the situation takes an Alien turn and creatures start popping out of chests. In the end, they avoid becoming lizard chow, but the victory comes at a high price as they must say goodbye to Chief Engineer Hemmer. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss “All Those Who Wander,” the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ inaugural season. We explore the reimagining of the Gorn, Star Trek as a platform for horror, the indestructible nature of Sam Kirk, and ask whether the added emotional texture in this story could be a path to Shouty Spock and an upcomi...

New Earth: Thin Air. The planet of Belle Terre has been through hell as have the colonists from the Federation but what was thought to be a random Klaud attack may have made the planet uninhabitable for life, forever unless the crew of the Enterprise can come up with a solution in a matter of days. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Casey Pettitt talk about New Earth: Thin Air. We discuss a new problem, bluffing, a sickness, the solution, a death, our ratings and final thoughts. In the news we have two Mirror War comics to discuss, issue six and the one-shot, Sisko. The Alien franchise and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In space, no one can hear you scream. But for unlucky Starfleet landing parties, meeting a nightmarish alien menace can prove as traumatic as deadly. For La'an Noonien-Singh, who carries the burden of having survived captivity in a Gorn breeding colony during childhood, another encounter with the monstrous lizards proves both physically and mentally challenging. And to make sure the audience is equally freaked out by the terrifying encounter, Strange New Worlds leans heavily on the imagery of the Alien franchise—the epitome of sf horror. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Lee Hutchison to look at the latest episode of Star Trek: trange New Worlds, “All Those Who Wander,” alongside the films that inspired it, from the chest-burster scene in the original 1979 movie to Ripley’s final moments in Alien 3. We also take in reference points from the beloved movies we grew up with, including Predat...
