1977 World Champion, author, and speaker Shaun Tomson joins the pod to talk about the power of surfing. He tells the story of his own 16-year career on the Championship Tour, the early days of pro surfing, his World Title season, and the moment he decided to pursue surfing as a career. He breaks down the upcoming Corona Open J-Bay, lists his favorite surfers ever at Jeffreys Bay, recalls how Filipe Toledo reimagined how to surf the wave with his iconic 10-point ride there, and reveals how there’s nowhere to hide on the perfect pointbreak and how it can expose your inadequacies as a surfer. Big Wave surfer and Red Bull Big Wave Awards nominee Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca joins the podcast to talk about the happiest year of his life. He discusses his big 2022 that included the birth of his first daughter, watching his brother Joao compete on the Championship Tour, and being the only man nominated for all three categories of the 2022 Red Bull Big Wave Awards. Former Championship Tour surfer, 1995 G-Land finalist, and Laguna Beach local Jeff Booth joins the pod to talk about G-Land and his career on tour. He dives into all things G-Land, breaks down the different distinct sections of the long left break, describes what it was like to stay in the camps there, and looks back at surfing in the 1995 Final against Kelly Slater. Star Championship Tour rookie Callum Robson talks about the promising start to his young career. He discusses his big win at the Challenger Series opener at Snapper Rocks, what it meant for him, how he pushed his surfing in the intense dog-eat-dog environment, and thriving with a more attacking style. He details his time on the CT so far, leaning on the Australian veterans like Owen Wright, creating a tight crew of young Australian surfers similar to the Brazilians, and being aware and prepared for the Mid-season Cut coming into the season. He looks back at his road to the tour, from growing up in Evans Head, originally wanting to be a football player, doing a carpenter apprenticeship with his dad and realizing his priorities, and getting pushed by surfers like Liam O’Brien and Ethan Ewing. He then looks forward to the rest of the 2022 season (especially J-Bay and Tahiti), talks about his mindset, and sets his goals of making the WSL Final 5 and getting 1% better every day. Challenger Series competitor, former Championship Tour surfer, and DJ Dimity Stoyle joins to talk about her career. She discusses focusing all her energy at the moment on the Challenger Series, starting off at Gold Coast and continuing at Sydney. She looks back at how commentating with Laura Enever on the WSL broadcasts last year and making the film Surfing with Dan Scott, Ava Warbrick, and all her closest friends during the pandemic gave her the urge to return to doing contests. She talks about signing with Roxy at age 30 and shares thoughts on the current state of surfing, how major brands are shifting more towards valuing people who are true to who they are and passionate about what they do, and trying to set a good example for the next generation of women in surfing. WSL Commentator Shannon Hughes joins the pod to talk about the Mid-season Cut and her journey to becoming a Championship Tour broadcaster. First, she shares her thoughts on the Mid-season Cut, what it was like to experience it on the ground in Margaret River, witnessing all the emotions, and also seeing how the pressure pushed the level of performance through the roof.
