Emerald Johnson is hired to investigate the death of a local woman. Julie Macklemore disappeared in 2013. Her body was found two years later. But Julie's life was much more than the sensationalized news surrounding her death. In this first episode, Emerald meets the person closest to Julie, who knew her best.
Emerald meets Julie’s mother, Angela, and discovers disturbing news about the woman who raised Julie … and about the dark events of Julie’s college years. Armed with new information, Emerald calls Rachel for clarity only to walk away with more questions.
Emerald interviews Julie’s father, Walter. He talks about Julie’s special accomplishments and the years she was bullied before sharing Julie's tragic secret. A man from Julie's past is interviewed but doesn't seem interested in talking to Emerald.
Walter shares the joy of his daughter’s life before shocking Emerald with his thoughts on who might have really killed Julie. Angela shows her detachment from her daughter’s life & Caleb makes an admission that sends Emerald changes the entire story of Julie.
As Emerald’s investigation deepens, Rachel shares her greatest fears about the series and what it will do to Julie’s memory. She accuses Caleb of crimes against Julie but Emerald has a conversation with Caleb that changes the way she views him. Before they’re done, he warns Emerald over who she should truly be careful of.
Emerald uncovers who Stanford Wilson was, to Julie and her story. Caleb gives Emerald a clue to Julie’s fate while Rachel and Angela put up walls.
