Students from six Portland-area high schools have created a vaccine finder. The tool can be accessed on any device that sends a text. The finder can search Oregon zip codes to find available appointments at pharmacies. Rye Scholin, a senior at St. Mary’s Academy cofounded the Portland Student Pandemic Response group a year ago. In that time, students have collaborated on a variety of projects, from mask making to raising money and donations for the Community Transitions School for kids experiencing homelessness. The vaccine finder is the basis for another program that goes beyond finding a vaccination site. The program provides information on the vaccine: what it is, what to expect and how to follow up after getting the shot. We talk with cofounder Rye Scholin and Cole Songster, a service project coordinator with the group.
