Most Americans can recall back to school being in classes that talked about the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused, 19 of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging. This event was made historically cemented into our culture by the sheer size of those involved and by the popularity of playwright Arthur Millers 1953 award-winning play “The Crucible” Arthur Miller’s play was a metaphor for the “Witch Hunt” for communists during the Red Scare however it made the events of the 1600s in the American Colonies common knowledge.
