Part 1 of 2. The collapse of the Cypress Freeway (I-880) occurred during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake on California’s Central Coast on October 17 at 5:04 p.m. local time. The earthquake was centered near Santa Cruz on a section of the San Andreas Fault System and was a magnitude of 6.9. The earthquake was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries of which 42 died on the Cypress Freeway when the double-decker road pancaked down onto the other.
