A while ago, I heard a quick online soundbite about how different the food we eat today is nutritionally, when compared to the food our grandparents ate. Although there were no sources, the soundbite suggested that if you ate an orange today, you’d need to eat eight of them to get the same nutrition as an orange your grandmother or grandfather ate. I figured there would be a lot of truth in this. Due to the fact that food today is grown so much faster, and generally picked when not completely ripe, as well as in many cases eaten several weeks after picking, it makes sense that we’re probably not getting as much nutrient value as the food we ate a few generations ago. However, I wanted to know for sure exactly how much less vitamins, minerals, and nutrient value I’m getting today, when compared to a carrot or lettuce that my Oma may have eaten when she was a girl.
