The time has come for the year-end review of our model portfolio, a collection of 15 stocks that we selected in January as our core investments for 2021. The last quarter of the year has been a torrid time for growth stocks and our model portfolio. As growth investors, you get somewhat accustomed to volatility but this year has been especially turbulent as investor sentiment swung back and forth due to a series of world events. This was the year to be an index investor as the S&P steadily climbed and ended the year up almost 30%. At the end of Q3, only 8 of the 15 stocks were showing positive returns but as we near the end of the final quarter, only 4 are showing positive returns and the portfolio as a whole is showing a negative return. While the model portfolio has underperformed in its year of inception, as long-term investors, we are prepared to give it time as the investment thesis for most of the stocks remains intact.
