welcome to the next episode of mindfulness for everyday life. The topic for this episode is seen with eyes of wisdom. Now this is a play on words we see using our eyes,but the eyes of wisdom and mindfulness traditions. R the letter, I, the eye of interdependence and the eye of impermanence. So the first of these two is impermanence, and I want to share a quick thought here, you know, as we go through the workshop about mindfulness for everyday life, the secret to mindful living to living mindfully is to remove all the ideas, all the concepts.

Uh, in order forus to have the ability to see with the eyes of wisdom, where we can start tosee things the way they really are. So I'll go through this a little bit morewith each of these two eyes of wisdom, starting with impermanence. So theconcept or the idea that I want to share here comes from a story, and this isan old Sufi story of a King who was really dealing with.

Uh, theunpleasantness of difficult things in life. And he assembled all the wisepeople that he could and ask them to come up with an expression or a sane thatwould help him to feel more at ease about the discomforts and the difficultthings he was experiencing in life. And the wise people came up with variousthings, couldn't figure out what would work.

And then they finally came up with anexpression. And the King wanted something that would always be true so thatanytime he could think about it, he would know that this statement was alwaystrue. So they came up with the statement, the expression, this too shall pass.They engraved it on a ring and presented it to the King.

of this tooshall pass. It was a really helpful one, especially during difficult times,because it's a reminder that the nature of reality is impermanence. That is tosay, things are always changing. Now we can observe this in nature, whether itbe the expansion of the universe or any aspect of nature that we can observe.

The seasons arealways changing. Life brings death, which brings life, which brings death. Andthat's a cycle that goes on and on. You can see a tree, for example, drops itsseeds and the seeds turn into other trees. And that tree will develop seeds andit will drop those. And that's the cycle of life is constant

We observe itand everything. And we can observe it in our own day to day experience this tooshall pass as a reminder that each moment to moment experience that we'rehaving is unique. Now, for me, the beauty of a moment is not measured by thepleasantness of that moment or the unpleasantness of that moment.

It's measured bythe uniqueness of that moment. For me, it's really helpful to remember at themoment I'm experiencing no matter how pleasant or unpleasant is a unique momentin space and time. It's a moment that has never been an a moment that willnever be again and yet here I am experiencing it. And this one unique space andtime that is the present

So the otherconcept that's helpful for here for this topic of impermanence. Again, asclouds in the sky, when I observed the clouds in the sky, you look at

a cloud and youthink it's the static thing, but it's not. If you look at it, it's continuallygrowing or continually moving or continually shrinking, and that's the natureof cloud.

So you can lookat it. And in one specific moment in time, it looks like this. And then in thenext moment in time, it's changed and it no longer looks like this. Now itlooks like that. And so it is with all things in life. And for me, it's reallyhelpful to keep this expression in mind that life like clouds that are everchanging the expression I use to remind me of this is right now, it's likethis.

And then I cantake a look around and I can make an assessment. And I noticed this in my ownpersonal life. Right now I am a father of three young kids and I'm living thelife of a father of three young kids. And it's just right now, it's like thisin the future. They won't be young. I'll be the father of teenagers.

Right now in this moment,you can pause and you can say right now it's like this and take an inventory ofhow things are and notice with time, things will change because that's thenature of reality.

Life isconstantly changing. Uh, you yourself are constantly changing. And I like AlanWatts suggestion, his quote, where he says you're under no obligation to be thesame person. You were five minutes ago. And that's because we're alwayschanging. New information gets introduced. And now I'm slightly differentbecause I read a book or because I listened to a workshop or because I gotmarried or because I got divorced or whatever it is, we're always changing.

We're alwaysexperienced in life. In a new way. So that in a nutshell is the first I haveseen with eyes of wisdom. That's the eye of impermanence. The next eye is theeye of interdependence. Now the idea of interdependence is that. Everything isconnected to other things. For example, everything has causes and conditions.

And this isa really important thing to understand. Because it implies that this is becausethat is, and if I want to change whatever this is, if it's something that'schangeable, I have to understand the thing that makes

So I want toexplain this in, in terms of something that we can all visualize here. Soimagine a car, everybody who's listening to this as probably written in a card.Driven a car or at least seen a car and a car. In, in a very real way issomething that doesn't actually exist in and of itself without the things thatmake the car exist.

There's not a single itemthat you could pick up and bring it to me.

That would bethe car because the car has all of those items or at least some of those items.And this is a really interesting thing to notice because if the car isn't anactual thing, It's made up of a bunch of things we'll eat, which of thosethings, uh, would fall under the same, the same dilemma. If I were to take themotor, for example, and now I disassemble the motor into all of its parts, allof its causes and conditions.

And this goes on and on and on. So everything has causes and conditions.This is the understanding of the nature of interdependence.

And this is areally fascinating thing. The reason we call this, the two eyes of wisdom inthe mindfulness traditions is because the, the eyes imply how we perceive. Soif I see the world in a way where I feel like things are not interdependent,That would be unskillful. If I see the world in a way where things do not seemimpermanent, things seem to be permanent.

That's alsounskillful. That's why I seen with the two eyes of wisdom is the implicationthat I start to see life in and reality in the lens of it being

impermanent andit being interdependent. So with an understanding of interdependence, We startto see things for how they really are. In fact, there's a teaching by Zenmaster Tik, not Han who says, if you've ever looked at a flower and all you sawwas the flower, then you've never actually seen the flower.

And what he'simplying here with this expression or with this teaching is that to really seethe flower, I have to see all the non flower elements that make up the flower.In other words, I see the sunlight and I see the rain and I see the dirt and Isee the time and I see the bees and I see everything that makes the flowerexist.

And when I dothat, what I start to notice is it's all these non flower elements that make upa flower. So to separate the flour from all the non flour elements is to missin a very important way. What actually makes a flower a flower. Now, this isreally profound when we start to see the world through this lens ofinterdependence and he becomes even more profound when we start to seeourselves.

Now, the way that this relates to mindfulness and foreveryday life is that we typically see things with the unskillful view ofthings being permanent so-and-so's mean? Yeah. So-and-so will always be thatway.

Now there's afinal thought I want to share with you that comes from the mindfulnesstraditions. And this is an analogy, a story to help you understand the way thatwe tend to perceive reality. And this is the story of the six blind men. Andthis is a story that comes from Buddhist traditions. And the story is about,uh, some blind men who were trying to describe an elephant to each other, andthey were all standing at different places.

Say, no,elephants are like snakes. They had this they're long and windy and they move.And you get the picture. So because of where we stand inspace, we perceive things from a unique vantage point.

So,this is an important understanding to have about how we each perceive reality.

We're limited inspace and time space in the same way as the blind men and the elephant becauseof where we stand. But time also, because things are impermanent. So if I'mdescribing the elephant while the elephant's taking a bath, I'm describingsomething very different than when I'm describing when the elephants go intothe bathroom or when the elephant is doing, you know, scratching its body upnext to a tree or whatever the point is that because space and time areconstantly changing.

My ability toperceive reality is limited by space and time. And that is the understanding ofseeing through the eyes of wisdom. So with that in mind, I want to wrap this upwith a quote, and this is a quote that comes from Alan Watts. Again, thephilosopher who says the only way to make sense. Out of change is to plungeinto it, move with it and join the dance.
